Let’s Go! School Nutrition
Why School Nutrition?
School nutrition programs serve balanced, low cost or free lunch to more than 32 million children each day. School lunches follow strict nutrition guidelines. They contain a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy. They meet minimum and maximum age appropriate calories ranges, limit saturated fat, and limit sodium. Nutrition programs are important allies in our mission of increasing healthy eating in children and youth.
What We Do
Let’s Go! brings together school nutrition directors in various regions of the state to form high functioning, collaborative workgroups. These workgroups come together to form a unified school nutrition effort to provide healthy school meals. Our workgroups implement best practice and evidence based strategies, including:
- Increasing the nutritional quality of school meals
- Educating the public about the benefits of school lunch
- Advocating for school nutrition programs at the local, state, and national levels
- Implementing the voluntary nutrition standards set by the USDA’s Healthier US School Challenge
- Utilizing techniques, such as Smarter Lunchrooms, to guide healthier student choices in the cafeteria
Participating Schools
Currently there are six School Nutrition Workgroups covering forty six districts and departments containing 247 participating schools serving over 93,000 kids partnering with Let’s Go!
